The Importance of Play with Georgie St Clair

I am very excited to introduce our guest blogger (and challenge sponsor!) this week, Georgie St Clair. I have been a longtime admirer of Georgie's beautiful artwork, she is she a talented illustrator who weaves beautiful botanical elements into her images. Georgie's creations are delicate, playful and evoke a sense of whimsy and true romance. Her glamorous muse 'Sassy du Fleur' can turn a scattering of petals into an enviable evening gown and following her adventures (and her ever changing wardrobe) is a true delight. We are lucky to have Georgie sharing her insights and captivating close up photos of her artwork on the journal this week. If you are inspired by the adventures of Sassy du Fleur and want to try your own floral creation you can download Georgie's free fashion template and share your creation for this week's challenge!

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”

I love this quote by George Bernard Shaw. Play is something I’m embracing more and more as I grow older. I’ll be 40 this year and I’m probably the most creative I’ve ever been. Due to the fact that I like to play.

For me, I spend my play-time with petals, paint and pencils. I pull petals apart, examine them, cut them up, break them, paint them, throw them in the air, stamp on them on the ground. Just to see what happens.

I began posting my playtime on Instagram a couple of years ago. And people seemed to like it!

I started this Instagram journey around 2014, as a way of enjoying small moments of creative time, whilst being a mum to my very young daughter Daisy, and her two older brothers, my gorgeous boys Zac & Jake.

Fast forward to 2017, and I’ve seen my creative business grow and bloom simply by sharing my playtime on the platform. My illustration and design business is still very young. I’m still working part-time as a digital marketing consultant  two days a week, but I plan to change that in the next 12 months to become full-time (fingers firmly crossed!) .

When I first started on Instagram, I loved the weekly and monthly challenges (such Creatively Squared). I enjoyed thinking of new ways to answer those challenges simply with a few flowers, leaves, maybe an illustration or drawing. Mental and creative stimulation away from Peppa Pig and Disney movies!

Whoever you are, your age, your profession, family situation. I believe we can all benefit mentally, spiritually even physically from playtime. I think Instagram has given us purpose and an excuse to share these moments with other like minded people.

Your idea of play may not be flowers. It might be a craft, your passion for cooking, your love of photography. It might be a fascination for taking apart motorbike engines! It really doesn’t matter. As long as makes you feel inquisitive and it brings enjoyment. Pull it apart, examine the pieces, cut them up, break them, photograph them and share your discoveries and playtime with the world. I promise you’ll feel better for it.
